Bible Journaling for Beginners: How to Get Started (Even If You Can’t Draw)

Welcome to FaithWalk Bible Journaling Academy! If you’ve been curious about Bible journaling but thought, “I’m not creative enough” or “I can’t draw,” I have good news for you—you don’t have to be an artist to Bible journal.

Bible journaling is simply a creative way to slow down, spend time in God’s Word, reflect on Scripture, pray, and record what God is speaking to your heart.

Whether you use colorful pens, stickers, Scripture cards, traceables, or simply write your thoughts in the margins, there is no “perfect” way to Bible journal. The goal isn’t to create beautiful artwork. The goal is to grow closer to God.

In this beginner-friendly guide, I’ll show you how to start Bible journaling simply, using supplies you may already have at home.

What Is Bible Journaling?

Bible journaling is a way of studying and responding to God’s Word creatively. Instead of simply reading a Scripture and moving on, you pause and spend time thinking about what the verse means and how it applies to your life.

You might write a prayer, highlight a meaningful word, add a sticker, use a traceable, create a small illustration, or write what you believe God is showing you through the Scripture.

The important thing to remember is this: Bible journaling is about your time with God—not your artistic ability.

What Do I Need to Start Bible Journaling?

You do not need a lot of expensive supplies to begin. Start simple with what you already have.

A few beginner-friendly supplies include:

• A Bible or journaling Bible
• Pens or colored pencils
• Highlighters
• Bible journaling stickers
• Scripture cards or printable journaling cards
• Traceables or stencils
• Washi tape (optional)
• A notebook or prayer journal

Start small. You can always add more supplies as you discover what you enjoy using.

Your First Bible Journaling Activity — Step by Step

You’re ready to try your first Bible journaling activity! Don’t worry about making it perfect. This is simply time for you and God.

Step 1: Choose a Scripture
Start with a short verse that speaks to your heart. A wonderful verse for beginners is Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Step 2: Read It Slowly
Read the verse two or three times. Don’t rush. Ask yourself: What word or phrase stands out to me?

Step 3: Write What Stands Out
Write the word or phrase that caught your attention. Then write one or two sentences about why it is meaningful to you today.

Step 4: Turn the Scripture Into Prayer
Talk to God about what you just read. Your prayer doesn’t have to be long or complicated. Simply speak from your heart.

Step 5: Add Something Creative
Add a sticker, highlight a word, use a traceable, add a little color, or decorate the page with something that reminds you of the Scripture.

Step 6: Date Your Page
Write today’s date somewhere on your page. Later, you can look back and remember what God was showing you during this season of your life.

Remember: Your Bible journal doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. This is your personal time with God.
